Why is my friend in agonizing pain, and not me? Paul tells us in Romans that God's ways are unsearchable. I have to be OK with not knowing. God knows a lot of things that we don't, and we need to trust His everlasting love and wisdom.
I was reading a blog written by nuns, and the writer talked about the Examen, the last prayer of the day, when you reflect on all the day's circumstances and how you've responded to them. One component of the Examen is giving God thanks for the opportunities He gives you to do good. Maybe you are good at handling a crisis. Maybe you are patient with children. Maybe your sense of humor can help people laugh in the midst of their problems. This was a good thing to think about, how it is that God uses you. For me, I think I have the sense of humor.
Talking about her struggle with cancer, my friend once wrote to me that she felt heavy-hearted all the time, too serious and contemplative for general society. She said she liked to laugh, and she enjoyed people who laughed at, and despite, their problems, but she just didn't feel like she could ever be carefree. She said she enjoyed my sense of humor and my laughter, and that made me feel good.

I just just thinking last night how we can still some things learn from other traditions that differ from ours. It would serve me well to be more contemplative and think about my day and my responses. Did I honor God, or disgrace him?
What a beautiful and true post. I'm so thankful that no matter what we see, or feel, we can trust in God's loving sovereignty. If I were suffering I would want you close by to cheer me up.
I would be there for you, Webb Pages!
Trying to recall where in Proverbs it says, A merry heart does good like a medicine; another place it says, Anxiety in a man's heart weighs him down
