My husband and I made our occasional trip to the local Costco, an indoor shopping wherehouse for members. These trips almost always include picking up printed pictures, and finding a comfy display couch to look at them. We schedule the trips around dinnertime, so that we can enjoy the Costco cuisine sitting in a shaded patio table. As we carry our pizza and hot dogs, we scan the eating area for a "shaded" table. The importance we place on finding a table with an umbrella inside the indoor seating area always makes us giggle-so maybe that makes us weird-or maybe it makes us really fun to hang out with.
I did break my own rule, and bought a book despite having a number of unread books just waiting for me to read them. But I needed this book, both for my collection and for my social persona. You see, I collect books by comedians in the hope that I, too, might someday be funny-so I couldn't not buy a book by Bob Newhart. I realize it is a lot of pressure for these comedic writers, but I count on the reading of their books to make me funny and interesting.

So what was it that you bought and read?
Humor and laughter are waaaayyyyy overrated, IMO.
That sounds like a great book. I really like his humor. I wish more comedy was like it, today.
Its called "I shouldn't even be doing this."
You do not think laughter is overrated, you've previously said that my posts made you laugh, and you liked that. You are either lying now, or you were lying then!! Maybe YOU are over-rated. But your whole Tabasco kick was really funny, and your mid-life crisis was funny, so I don't believe that you don't appreciate humor.
I love Bob Newhart's dry humor. My husband taught me to appreciate comedians, and some of my favorites are Seinfeld, Rita Rudner, Ellen DeGeneres and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Richard Dreyfus and Ray Romano, Kevin James, Bill Murray. It is so nice when someone can be clean AND funny. I loved the Bob Newhart show. His dry humor would have me rolling!
OK, Mike-you've got me thinking of comedians. Its a very passionate topic for me, as I have always loved to hear people laugh, so to be the one making them laugh was an amazing feeling. It wasn't until I married that I saw professionals making people laugh. My husband has a collection of SNL tapes, plus Johnny Carson, who I just loved when he did the psychic envelope reader. Lily Tomlin was great, all her different characters. Honestly, I think she is a big part of my rufus the dog persona. I worked at the library, and we would "do" people for practice, and to make each other laugh. "Mad About You" defined our first years of marriage, and Helen Hunt made me laugh with her subtle expressions, Paul Reiser made me howl, and the guest stars-Carroll O'Connor, Carol Burnett, Mel Brooks, made me roar with laughter. My dad was really the first comedian I ever knew, and my mom (without knowing it)played the straight man to his loud and laughing, storytelling person. I love the pairing, and with the variety of friends I have, I've played both parts.
You are wierd :o) and really fun to hang out with.
And you are funny.
I personally like Brian Regan...you MUST hear him.
Brian Regan rocks. I just discovered another exciting comic this morning. His name is Ken Davis. He's a Christian, too. I was going to blog about him, but right now, especially since this discussion is so apropos, I think a comment will do.
I was hoping someone would bring up Brian Regan! He is so very funny. We saw his concert a few months ago - what a hoot!
Take luck,
~Neetm
I am familiar with Brian Regan through the B.R. fan club at GTY.
I, too, am a comedian of the silent Buster Keaton era. Have you seen my shtick about pooping on cacti?
Of course, I enjoy humor. And I was just being a dork. I am not even rated, so how can I be over-rated?
What cannel is Bob Newhart on? I totally agree that humor does not have to be raunchy to be good.
maybe nick at nite reruns??
I love books too--we have way too many. I'm trying to pare down, so those that I read to Tim I've been putting out in the garage to get rid of. (Can't get rid of my own, can I?)
Your thoughts on buying books reminds me of how I buy cleaning supplies. I tend to hope that just purchasing them and having them on my shelf might make my house cleaner. The hard part is opening them up and applying them. (Sometimes I actually do! Which only justifies the next purchase...)
I do like reading so much better than cleaning!
By the way, I do think your reading habits pay off. You're quite a funny read when you want to be. (That's the trick, to be funny when you want to be, and not when you're being serious...) Maybe you should write a book, and get Costco to carry it.
Also, I would guess you like funny movies as well? I always liked Bob Hope and Bing Crosby--the Road Pictures...Do I sound old? They're from before my time, and my kids love them too.
Bob Hope movies are some of the very funniest movies I've ever seen. He could "say" a million words and portray his emotions and thoughts completely in just one look.
