John Piper sermon excerpt
We start with this because this [tribulation] is the environment where all the virtues happen. Tribulation is the normal experience of believers in this life. Some tribulation we share with unbelievers (like sickness and calamity and death) and some is unique to believers (like persecution for Christ’s sake). But my main point here is that tribulation is normal and to be expected in this world. It’s the setting for all our love and joy and hope and patience and prayer. Affliction is where we live. If you don’t live there now, you will. Learning that this is normal will be a great help to you when it comes.

Amen!
For some of us affliction has been a sort of normal environment, and others have just begun to taste the afflictions that God's providence inevitable brings. But there is rest through it all, and even if it doesn't seem so, there will be a heavenly rest that we haven't yet experienced here.
Jennifer, you've expressed exactly what I've been thinking through the past few weeks! God is causing us to be reminded of these truths for a purpose.
I just told the girls in my small group last night that pretty much every hero of the faith endured persecution that we could never imagine. That's what made their faith so strong.
We want their faith, but we don't want their trials! May that never be true of us...but may we embrace God's gracious will for our lives.
