So it's like this: I have some bad (mutated) genes in my brain. (Specifically, the genes for SCA 8.) These bad genes are corrupting the good genes that are close by. A Chinese research group is studying the H-DAC protein, which allows this to happen. They are trying to make a drug that will inhibit the H-DAC protein, so that the bad genes will not have the bad influence on the good genes. If they can make a drug that will do this, I could keep more of my good genes, and have fewer bad ones. The most adverse reaction they foresee is hot-dog fingers, a condition where my fingers actually turn into the traditional American barbeque meat substitute.
SCA 8 occurs in 1 in 200,000 people. (Thanks to the people who asked me that.)

Where are they in testing this? Or has it not made it to testing stage yet? Would you use it or have significant hesitation to? What business is it of mine anyway?
If you don't mind me asking...what is the name of the condition? If you don't want to tell me just say "bug off, lady". I won't be offended...hurt, but not offended. :)
huh-wha - Hot dog fingers? Does that mean sausage toes as well? Dang.
Socks and gloves, girlfriend. We can do it.
The name is . . . spinocerebellar ataxia. It affects my fine motor control, balance, vision, gait, speech, and muscle tremor. It will be a year before the drug is ready to be tested on humans. I would still take the drugs that are controlling the symptoms, but if the new drugs work, I would have fewer bad symptoms that would need to be controlled by drugs.
The toes, in my case, are apt to morph into jelly beans.
Oh, and this is the reason Mr. M got me a Wii fit for my birthday . . . to practice with the yoga and balance games . . . and play DDR.
And SAUSAGES??? Teri, that's just silly!
Hey, my kids just got a wii. They are obsessed with it. Great fun. My hubby and I made fun drinks and played golf tonight after they went to bed! It was a hoot.
I really can't believe the drug could be ready in a year...incredible to be able to live through the transition into another stage in our world where these symptoms can be managed. I marvel at what God is doing with this world.
So, how are you doing' with the Wii Yoga? I'm terrible!
(I DID score 300 on bowling once)...only once.
Have you tried the downhill skiing? That's pretty cool.
I'm good at yoga, and catching fish from the iceberg. I'm not good at boxing, but it is fun to knock Mr.M out! I don't do aerobics or strength training. Usually.
Boy, taking all these Wii comments out of context you all could seem so much more outlandish than I assume you to be in real life. Catching fish from an iceberg? (I hope you don't actually knock Mr. M out!) Wow. I'm still impressed.
Well, at least you wouldn't have ladyfingers....
I wouldn't mind ladyfingers if they were in a good tiramisu!
Is there such a thing as a bad tiramisu?!??
How wonderful, Jen. Praying...and we'll see what the Lord does.
I hope the good genes kick the bad genes butt!!
And the adverse side-effects also include people trying to eat your hot dog fingers.
I've been praying for you ever since we met at Michelle's house a year ago. Glad to hear about a potential medication coming around.
OH FUNNY! My Captcha reads: curedin
