Thoughtful Thursday

I'm reading through Deuteronomy, and I am reminded of the current political climate in this country-the distrust and dissent. Just as the Israelites wailed and complained to Moses about how unhappy he had made them by leading them out to the desert, so we wail and complain to our political leaders about how unhappy we are with unjust laws, declining morality, and a collapsing economy. But are the politicians really the problem? Was Moses really the problem? No, he was just an instrument through which God led the people through the desert. God is in charge of our laws and our society and government today, too. Our political leaders are just instruments through which God leads us. Back when it looked to all the world like Joseph's evil brothers had sold him into slavery and sent him to Egypt, he had to tell them, "It was not you who sent me here; it was God." (Gen. 45:8.) The powerful people around us don't control us or our circumstances. They are all just puppets doing God's pleasure. He is the puppet master.

The significant difference is that the Israelites were grumbling against a righteous God and a righteous ruler, where my groanings are against wicked and unrighteous rulers who will not acknowledge justice.
Psalm 2 is fitting.

However, I accept the parallel of wicked leaders being a kind of punishment in the wilderness. ; )

I don't disagree with you that our rulers are at times wicked and totally unrighteous, but what I'm saying is that maybe our groanings against them are misdirected-they can only do what God allows them to do, after all-like when Satan could only hurt Job after he had gotten permission, and even then there was a limit to what he could do.
