Starving
My friend tells me that if your political writings don't get you killed, then they are not worthy to be called political writings. Well, since I know Jesus, I guess I'm ready if I do get killed. I am halfway through Nothing to Envy, and last night's reading was mostly about the horrible famine and the all-too-common deaths by starvation. One by one, family members are systematically found dead due to a lack of food. What makes this so moving, touching, and angering to me, is that it is by choice of the nation's leaders that this happens. Foreign aid has been offered and rejected. At least one aid agency pulled out because their supplies were going no further than the leaders' mouths. The impoverished DPRK is surrounded by wealthy, industrialized countries, yet the leadership continues on its self-destructive path. This just makes me so confused and sad and angry, and it makes me pray for all foreign countries and Christians and missionaries like no missionary book has. I definitely recommend Nothing to Envy by Barbara Demick if you really want to know what's going on behind the very closed curtains of North Korea.
