Through the Wardrobe Doors With the Most Timid Dog in the World
Those of you familiar with C. S. Lewis' Narnia series will understand the title. Lewis' characters go through doors at the back of a wardrobe and enter a whole new world. I wonder if this is what Rufus thinks is happening with his new doggie door. We got new windows and doors for our house, which meant getting rid of the doggie door. Having no doggie door and not trusting me to let him out to heed the call of nature, Rufus quit drinking for a few days. We had to put a bowl of water outside for him so that he would drink. He is very self-sufficient and skeptical. He always leaves a few kibbles in his bowl just in case that's the day we decide to call it quits and stop feeding him. I think it is fair to say that Rufus has no faith in us. We have a new doggie door now, relocated to a whole different side of the house. This is, for Rufus, terrifying. Mr. M and I are currently in negotiations with Rufus, attempting to prove to him that he will not be transported to a 3rd dimension by going through the new door. Mr. M and I are feeling like parents trying to convince an infant that something new and different is safe. It's a testing of our patience. Poor Rufus is now asleep at my feet, feeling, I'm sure, exhausted after the fiery trial of using his new door. A speedy recovery is all we can hope for.

Oh the adventurous life of dog owners! I laughed as I read, as I could see my dog doing the same exact thing. Hope he gets used to the new door soon!
It may sound silly, but the first "fiery ordeal" with his first doggie door left me so exhausted that I remembered a verse in Job about God's giving wisdom to animals, and I really prayed that God would make Rufus understand.
Don't you bet this has all sorts of spiritual implications? God closes a door and we refuse to go on in the best way that He provides because we don't want to adjust. God opens a door to a new venue and we refuse because it's all so new and unknown. We hang on to what we have because we're afraid He'll provide. I think Rufus could be your new little character in an allegorical book!
I've thought that very thing. When I watch Rufus doze so restfully on the couch, unafraid of anything, I so wish I could be so confident in God's loving provision for me. Adopting Rufus always has made me think of Eph. 1, and God's adoption of us. That furry little guy has been a huge blessing and a visual aid for so many spiritual lessons.
Rufus may need his own blog so he can give his perspective on the issues. He sounds like an awesome friend!
Rufus has contributed to my blog often in years past.
