Trying to Get Smart
I've just finished Somewhere Inside, the story of Laura Ling and Euna Lee being held in captivity in North Korea for 4 months. Laura's sister, Lisa, did a lot to secure the girls' release. It was a moving and captivating story. It is said that, "A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down." History and politics is like medicine to me; but the story of a sister's love is sugar. The book was perfectly balanced, with just the right ratio of sugar and medicine. There is a lot written about the familial love and family history, but there is a good, necessary, deal of international politics. The book was so good that it whet my appetite to read more about international politics. I've ordered 3 autobiographies by North Koreans. I know their personal stories will interest me and capture my affections and interest, and I can only assume I will also learn some useful, factual information. I'm looking forward to getting smart.
