Prairie Dogs and City Squirrels
Last night, I drove to the edge of the city, right up to where the desert begins. There, in an empty desert field right across from the last trace of civilization, is the meeting grounds for the desert prairie dogs and the urban city squirrels. I could hear some of their chatter, but I've forgotten most of what I learned in my Rodent Linguistics class. I'm pretty sure I could make out the last words of the city squirrel to the prairie dog, though. After a lengthy discussion between the two, I overheard the city squirrel thanking the prairie dog for his thoughtful counsel and compassionate listening, and telling him how much he enjoyed the cathartic conversation they had just shared. I was just sitting there in my car, but I think I was witnessing a special moment of friendship.
