Trap Door Spider Tuesday

A memory of my mom that I cherish comes to mind every time I see an exposed hillside. Trap door spiders live in hillsides, and my mom often took me with her to find one to dig out and show to her class of excited youngsters. On a nice fall or spring day, my mom would grab a butter knife or other hill-carving implement, and we'd walk up the street to the exposed hillside. There we would look and poke around until we saw the desired item-a bright white dime-sized door. Trap door spiders make their homes using basically the same technique other spiders use to make webs . . . and they make them for the same purpose. The trap door spider makes its small cocoon of dense silk, camouflaged into the hillside, and it is so sensitive, that when any insect chances to walk over the door, the spider can sense it, and the insect meets with a sudden death. My mom loved nature, and she taught her students to do the same, and she instilled that love of nature in her daughter, too. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got a lot of gardening to do-cacti to plant in the flowerbeds.

I need a blog button, but I still don't know how to make one. (And that's not a "pertinent thought", anyway!)
