Romans 10 tells us that we can't be saved without hearing the word of God. We owe the privilege of hearing God's word, in our own language, to the Reformers. John Knox, William Tyndale, Mr. Wycliffe, John Purvey,Coverdale, John Rogers, Taverner, Mr. Zwingli, all saw the rightness of allowing laymen, and not just popes and bishops, to have access to the Bible, and to have the Bible printed in the languages spoken by the people. Thank God for all these men! Did they know at the time what a lasting impact their efforts would make for the Kingdom of God?
I love what William Tyndale said to a leading scholar in the Roman church who opposed his efforts to translate the Scriptures. He said, "If God spare my life, ere many years, I will cause a boy who drives the plough to know more Scripture than thou doest."
