Ideal Reader
I was reading a blog about writing a blog, and the author gave this challenge: describe your ideal reader, and then write for her. So here is my ideal reader: She is smart, but not nearly as smart as she pretends to be. She, although not proud of it, is prone to lying-a lot. She has a very over-inflated ego. She thinks everyone should like her, and if they don't, there must be something wrong with them. She has a wickedly dry sense of humor. (Her mother told her so.) She never turns down a compliment. She delights in the everyday adventures of a mundane life in Suburbia. She cares deeply for the people she cares about. She pretends to be cool and to be familiar with popular trends, while she really has no idea what's happening outside of her small circle of friends and family. She's really good at pretending to be cool and hip and with it. She prides herself in long, dark hair, and she loves her glasses because they make her look smart. So, there you have it; my ideal reader is me. Lucky for me that I like my own writing.
