Readjusting to the New Normal

Since I still have friends reading my blog (thank you!), I thought I'd post some thoughts I wrote in my journal several weeks back. I wrote about change, and how it happens to the best of us. Just when we get comfortably settled into our lives and our homes and we know who we can count on in the day of trouble, some change comes along and pulls the rug out from under us. Everything changes, and if we don't roll with the changes and readjust, then we'll be stuck in the past, and that isn't good for anybody. The biggest change in my life came after 3 years of marriage, plenty of time to get settled in to this new life with this new home and a husband and the usual plans for marital bliss and a little family. Then a diagnosis of a neurological disease came along, and the family plans had to go away. Mr. M and I held on to our plans for marital bliss, and we readjusted our lives to this new normal. I got some big, fat coffee mugs so I could carry my coffee and/or tea around the house more easily, and we got a dog to keep me company during the day. We put our energy into different areas of service, and have never felt any lack in our lives. The rug may have been pulled out from under us, but it landed in a good spot. We both say with David that God has put us in a pleasant pasture. (Psalm 16:6.) The trick is to never get too comfortable, and to always be flexible because unexpected change is always hiding in the corner, just waiting to jump out and surprise us at any moment.
