Advice on Taking Advice

I know the Titus 2 mandate for older women in the church to teach younger women. I love to see that in practice; however, I think there is a great need for discernment among the younger women as to if or how they might apply what they hear. For example, when I was a younger woman, an older woman in the church told me she liked to save money by painting her own house-the exterior. Not only was this dangerous for her, an older lady living in a 2-story house, it also cost a lot in supplies, which just sat in her garage rotting and taking up space until it was time to paint again. The expensive supplies that were left over deteriorated and became useless; plus, they took up a lot of valuable space. I decided not to take that advice. It was (and is) impractical for me. I fear that too many young women in the church-women who mean well-take the advice of older women-who also mean well-as authoritative. We must all weigh the advice we're given, pray about it, and consider it in light of our own life circumstances. We can all use advice, but we must consider carefully if, and how, we will apply it to our lives. What's right for one person is not right for every person.
