In my readings of Deuteronomy, I have been struck by the similarities between those of us who love God and the wandering Israelites. Just as God had to tell them over and over again to stay away from idols and the pagan worship of other nations all around them, so He tells us over and over again in the New Testament to keep away from worldly interests; to be separate and to have nothing to do with carnal lusts. God had saved the Israelites out of Egypt, and now He would be their God and Savior. He has called Christians out of the world to live a separate and holy life, to live as His people, a royal priesthood, and to keep ourselves unstained by the world. We don't need to know the latest on the Kardashians, and we don't need to (and shouldn't) watch a reality show about people losing their virginity. (Yes, that's a real, national TV show on a popular channel.) We who are part of God's kingdom need to live differently. We need to live as cities on a hill with our lights shining for all to see.
