As I have mentioned in previous posts, I have long been interested in the study of rodents, specifically those in genus gnawing mammals, such as squirrels and prairie dogs. In my studies, I have found that I share several traits with the common squirrel. In an article titled, "Trouper of the Treetops" by Jack Denton Scott (Marvels and Mysteries of Our Animal World, Reader's Digest 1964), Mr. Scott says that squirrels are the playboys of the animal world, spending most of their time somersaulting from branch to branch, barking and chattering with the sheer joy of life. "Miss E.A. Robinson, of Northport, N.Y, watched four young gray squirrels regularly meet a cottontail rabbit at sundown for a romp and a game of tag." The main point of the article is that squirrel-watching has become one of North America's most popular spectator sports.
I conclude, then, that if squirrels had opposable thumbs, they would surely keep a blog, a written record of their scamperings, for the sole purpose of entertaining the readers and inviting them to share in the sheer joy of life.
