Is Disease a Result of Personal Sin?

The Bible is clear on this. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. In John 5:14, the man's illness was a result of sin. However, the blind man from John 9:3 was blind and it had nothing to do with any sin. So, the Bible isn't always clear on whether any physical ailment is due to sin; what the Bible is VERY clear on, though, is this: that all physical ailments are for the glory of God. (Mark 2:10, John 11:4.) So how should we respond to physical ailments (or any other trial for that matter)? In wonder and praise. "God's voice thunders marvelously from Heaven, doing great things that we don't understand." (Job 37:5.) When any sufferings that we just can't understand come into our lives, the proper response is to praise our God who has a very intentional, if yet unknown, purpose in our trials.

Thanks. This has been on my mind for obvious reasons, and our pastor preached a really good sermon out of John 5 yesterday. I'm seeing daily that faith is essential, because our vision is so limited and we so often don't see the reasons or causes behind our suffering-but we know God is good and there IS purpose to our pain.

Jennifer, this is so true, He is very intentional. Very. So humbling. His scalpel of love can be very, well, at first, sharp and stinging, but in the end brings our good and the process has all been so He can receive the most glory in our Lives. That is the best part. Thank you :)
