Wolves in Sheeps' Clothing
What do you think of when you hear that? People, right? False teachers in churches? I found an ad on my porch this morning for some kind of mystical and magical meditation and movement room. There was a rather disturbing picture of a little kid in a meditative yoga position. Who knows what he was being taught?! I'm sure some of his little buddies are in the class, too. False teaching is sneaky. It creeps up on you before you even know it's there. I don't just say this out of theory or outside knowledge, rather, I know it first hand. When someone told me I was sick because of a lack of faith, it was evidence that this woman lived under the (false) belief that Satan is sovereign. The truth is that I am sick because God made me that way. He is the Creator and does as He pleases. This woman had a completely wrong view of God. She was worshiping a god who is not sovereign. She was not believing the Bible when it so clearly states that God is more powerful than any other being. False teaching is sneaky. When I was in college, I went to the home of a friend from church, and my friend's mother was trying to read the future in a broken egg. That is part of the voodoo religion, a false teaching. She was trying to add these voodoo practices into her Christianity. This is a subtle form of idolatry. It is so easy to slip into it; (remember the superstition of stepping on a crack, or opening an umbrella inside?) These seem like harmless little games, but the reality is that they cannot coexist with Christianity. We all need to check our own hearts and get rid of any idols that have snuck in, any ideas that have set themselves up against the eternal truths of God, and we need to gently show our Christian family members and friends when they are (usually unknowingly) letting false teachings taint their Christian beliefs.

It is so much human nature to want to add corruption...to the Scriptures. To our salvation. To our faith. Any form of legalism adding works to grace. So often places where the gospel has gone forth, it's mixed with the old religion of that people...the syncretism of Christianity with voodoo or whatever. Mormonism started with adding a book and a mythological metal tablet, and their theology is now nothing like Christianity at all except using the same words. We can't just leave well enough, fantastic enough, phenomenal provision by God, alone. It's what Galatians is all about. Paul was adamant! "But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you,let them be under God’s curse!" And over and over again he says in response to the many ways it messes up our thinking: "May it never be..."
