This is for my friend Andrea, who loves adoption stories. Our story really illustrates Ephesians 3:20, which speaks of God being able to do immeasurably more than we can ask or imagine. The day when a lawyer called us about Donny-a lawyer who wasn't working for us, just doing us a favor-Jay and I had pretty well given up on the idea of infant adoption. We had had our hopes crushed a few times, and we were told by one lawyer that it could be several years before we might be able to adopt. During this despairing time, I was very close to hopeless, yet I prayed daily that God would cause some birth mother somewhere, or some lawyer somewhere, to find favor in us and show us mercy and help us and give us hope. I prayed that He would send unseen angels to fight for us, as He promises to do in Joshua 23:10. I prayed fervently that He would fight against those things we had against us-age and a neurological condition-, and cause us to find favor in the eyes of a birth mother. I look back now and see that this is exactly what He did. He moved in the heart of a kind lawyer who we weren't formally working with, to send our profile to an agency in WA who was looking for a childless couple. This was something beyond our imaginations. We hadn't even thought to ask for that-but God showed us mercy, and he answered a prayer we hadn't even thought to pray. God truly knows the desires of our hearts, and delights to give those who love Him good gifts.
